Makapu'u (bulging eye) is on the eastern end of O'ahu and is popular with both locals and the tourists for its easy 1.75-mile hike on a paved road to the Makapu'u Point Lighthouse and then to the summit of Makapu'u Head. This is a popular spot for whale-watching in the winter and two years ago at this spot we were able to see Humpback whales during their annual pilgrimage to Hawai'i.
The hike to the Makapu'u Tide Pools starts along the paved road and then steeply descends down the mountain.

Instead of climbing back up the way we came down we circled around the point scrambling up, down, and through lava rock.
