What's SUP?

Stand-up paddle-boards, that's what.  Stand-up paddle-boarding/paddle surfing, or SUP, has been gaining popularity as it is accessible to both surfers and non-surfers.  SUP can be done in flat water or in the waves.  A has been itching to try surfing, but that seems to require a lesson (for which he received a coupon for his birthday).  We thought we could give SUP a go sans lesson and stopped by the Marine Corps Base Marina to rent boards.  R was nervous (big surprise) that she wouldn't be able to pull herself up onto the board when she inevitably fell in.  She also figured that since her core stability and balance are lacking there was no way she could even stand up to begin anyway.  A thinks he's some kind of superhero and never doubted his abilities to SUP.
It was a blast.

It was pretty easy to stand up and stay up, though as you can see from the photo above R definitely got wet, though one time she jumped in just to take a break.  SUP seemed to use less core than expected and more quads and shoulders.  At least in the harbor.  We can't wait to take them out farther, though we don't think catching waves is in our future.
