We recognize that "cold" is relative. But for the first time we were actually chilled and wishing we had more layers. We know that the temperature drops below freezing on the Big Island and sometimes there is snow. And it can get mighty cold watching the sunrise at Haleakala (according to the guide books, which mentions that hats, gloves, and blankets are necessary). (Spoiler - it's cold at sunset, too.) But in Kailua it has yet to drop below about 68 degrees.
In the mountains near Mililani we had heard that the temperature dips into the high 50s. That feels cold when you're wearing a tank top and flip flops! Sitting outside watching movies on a big screen we were huddled together under a blanket and just couldn't get warm. At least when we watch movies on a cool night at the Columbia Lakefront we were always prepared with hoodies and socks. We weren't expecting that here.
