Civic is Rugged

Civic has been searching for some adventure.  It was tired of its occupants getting it  sandy inside and not getting any action of its own.  So we gave into its urges and rented a kayak on base.  We wanted to ease it into the additional weight so we only took it 8 miles down the road to Lanikai beach.  We hadn't been out to the Mokes since we first came to Hawaii in August and thought it was time for a repeat visit. 

It was a windy day but our repeat kayak excursions have made us better at paddling as a team and we made it to the island with relative ease.  Bringing the kayak onto shore was a little challenge due to the tide but we made it without losing any equipment.

We wandered around the perimeter of the island as far as it was permissible.  The island is a bird sanctuary and the interior is off-limits to humans.  The strong current that hits the island makes it hard to walk around the entire perimeter, too.

We did find this little swimming hole that was calling out to A to jump in.

Our trip back was somewhat more eventful.  We thought it would be fun to ride a wave and we lined up the kayak to catch a wave.  But the wave clearly didn't like our positioning and over we went!  We managed to climb back in and were happy to see that we didn't lose anything or anyone.  A rainstorm dumped on us on the way back, but since we were already soaked from our unexpected dip it didn't matter much.  As A frequently points out, "once you're wet, you can't get any wetter". All this swimming around took in quite a bit of water and we had a doozy of a time getting the kayak onto the beach to relieve itself. 

Once most of the water drained we positioned the roof rack and loaded the kayak back onto Civic.  The water and sand continued to drain and Civic was happy, having felt that it was finally able to take part in a water sport other than rain.
