Kayaking in the Kahana River

The Kahana River is located on the Windward side of O'ahu and empties into the Kahana Bay.  Once again we loaded the kayak up on trusty Civic (this time remembering to lay a blanket first so we wouldn't put any more gashes in the roof) and set off about 30 minutes Northwest from Kailua.

The Kahana River is about one mile long so we knew it wouldn't be much of a workout.  To earn a Yo Mama we also paddled around the bay taking in the Koolau mountains.









R thinks this is the prettiest kayaking trip to date.  The mountains are so close to the shore here.  Since the water is slightly greener and less clear than in other spots on the island it gives the appearance that the mountains spill right into the water.

We paddled around the bay first because we missed the entrance to the river, tucked away from the beach beside these ropes.


















The river was very lush, very calm, and very peaceful.  Once we got far enough away from the main road we only heard chirping birds.

We took the river as far as we could make it in the kayak.  R provided the gas and A steered the caboose.

It became nearly impassable at a few spots but we persevered until we could not go any further, then flipped around.

The ropes called to A the entire time we were out so on the way back we stopped so he could act like a monkey.

He says it wasn't as fun as it looks because he couldn't get the momentum for a big swing.



On the way back we stopped at Kualoa Ranch because they were having a "Girl Rodeo". O'ahu has an active equine community, evident by the number of horse trailers and spectators at this event.

There was also some activities for children including an animal display from the 4-H club.  This is A with a tiny turtle.
