2011 Hibiscus Half Marathon

We completed our first half marathon in Hawaii.  The Hibiscus Half Marathon benefits The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and follows approximately the same course as the Honolulu Marathon (with a different turnaround point on Kalanianaole Highway).

Before the race
The course started at the Diamond Head end of Waikiki Beach and went through Kapiolani Park, Diamond Head Crater Park, and past the Honolulu Zoo.  The course was not flat; we encountered the first big hill approaching Diamond Head Beach Park and we had to climb the same hill again on the way back.

We both had PRs (personal best): R - 2 hr 16 min and A - 1 hr 53 min.  Even though the race started at 0530, it started to feel uncomfortably hot just past the turnaround point.  Also we reinforced our understanding of the Honolulu Marathon course and since this race's course was on the more scenic and interesting portion of the marathon course, for now we've decided against running the Honolulu Marathon.
