Our toughest race yet?

This was the setting from this weekend's race - the XTERRA Trail Running World Championship 21K at Kualoa Ranch.  It was intense and extremely challenging.  But the scenery couldn't be beat.

We demonstrated that we had the necessary toughness by donning tattoos.  Pirate Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck to be precise.

The race starts with a mile-long uphill climb.  This is the same path that started last year's 5K so we were prepared for the immediate slog.

Kualoa Valley

We ran past some odd sites in the middle of the valley and rainforest, some of which are or have been used as film sets.  We were told this structure, around mile 3, is for a movie that has not yet been released.

Any guesses? Maybe a scene from Lost?

Cows!  Cow paddies were one of the obstacles along the course.

Here's R above the Moli'i Fishpond near mile 7.  Two people behind her would stop and take a picture every time she snapped a photo.  This time they insisted she get her picture taken.  This was R's race strategy:  carry a camera and you have to take photo breaks, otherwise you just schlepped it for 13 miles.

This is part of a "Hawaiian Village" but it was less than midway up a huge climb and R had little patience for figuring out what qualified this area as a village and where other attractions might be.
Going Up
The longest climb came around miles 9-11.  Mile 10 and part of 11 were extremely steep and the mile 11 descent was a tiptoe through a single track of mud.  Running was not an option.  Those two miles took R 58 minutes.
And Up

R was thankful for the rope on the steep down

The last two miles were smooth sailing through a pasture and then onto a dirt road.  Here is where R lost all of her race-day comrades back in the forrest and headed on to the finish.

After a quick chug of water R once again got her hair cut after the race.  Pity for the stylist who had to touch her sweat-soaked hair.
Official times:  A - 2:32 and R - 3:14.  For comparison to road races of this distance, A was over 30 minutes off his best half marathon and R was 60 minutes behind.  Whew.  A has declared a moratorium on exercise.
