As we continue to hike our way around O'ahu, Waimano (many waters) Trail was next on our list. Described in our guidebook as an easy 2 mile roundtrip walk in Central O'ahu, we decided to check out a different part of the island.
One of most interesting tidbits about the trail is its trailhead - the trail starts outside the Waimano Training School and Hospital (originally known as the Waimano Home for the Feebleminded), which, from 1919 until 1999, was an incarceration facility for people with mental disabilities.
The trail follows the Waimano ridge behind Pearl City and an old irrigation ditch. These ditches and tunnels, which smelled so bad that even A decided just to pose in front of one rather than climb through it, were used to transport water from the Windward (wet) side of the island to the dry side to irrigate sugar or pineapple fields.
The trail offered nice views into the middle of the island with Pearl City, Mililani, and the Wai'anae mountain range in the background.

On the return loop the trail follows Waimano Stream, which resulted in muddy shoes, socks, and ankles. Good thing we've learned to always bring extra water and a towel for cleaning off our legs before getting back in the car.
