Last Day on Molokai

We spent our last day on Molokai enjoying the gorgeous view from our vacation rental before checking out.

We then drove to Maunaloa, the former home to Molokai Ranch.  Once a busy town that farmed pineapples and cattle it then switched to tourism in the 1970s.  Now it is a ghost town after most of its old homes were bulldozed in 1996.  We visited the Big Wind Kite Factory, one of only a few remaining businesses.

From Molokai Ranch we drove to Papohaku Beach, an isolated beach with big waves and strong currents that made it too dangerous for swimming.  As we traveled across the island the landscape was very dry and desolate until we got down to the shore.

The rest of the day was typical Molokai: we were offered pakalolo for the second time in two days, found one of the very few eating establishments open on Sunday, and had a long wait at the airport since the one or two airplanes that fly back and forth to O'ahu was delayed earlier in the day.  While waiting at the airport we sat on what we thought was a bench but turned out to be the baggage claim area, just to show you the size of Molokai airport.

This completed our goal of visiting the six main Hawaiian island.  We're so proud of ourselves for setting and reaching this goal.
