Shortly after R returned from a few weeks in Florida we popped over to Maui for one night. We were bummed to not see any whales during last year's Maui trip so returning to Maui during whale season was a priority. Hearing that whales come so close to Maui's shore, R really wanted to see whales from the hotel room's lanai.
The Maui Arts & Cultural Center is a beautiful venue. After enjoying a picnic dinner from a local restaurant on the Center's grounds we made our way to the "concert hall" which was rows of folding chairs under a starlit sky with palm tree silhouettes.
It probably goes without saying that it was a wonderful concert. Elton John played for three hours without taking a break. Even the music from his latest album was enjoyable. We're not music reviewers or even avid fans so we're not going to give you a concert review other than to say that we enjoyed it even more than we thought we would. It was a beautiful night in a beautiful outdoor setting.
The next morning we got up earlyish (we're not early-birds) and while enjoying hotel-room coffee from the lanai we spotted whales! Now R could go home happy. We sunblock-ed up and set off for a walk to see what we could see from the shore. A short walk off the hotel's property brought us to a great lookout point where we were successful in our shoreline whale-watching.
We eventually tore ourselves away from the view and continued down the road until we got to a "black beach" (according to the sign). We would call it a red, black, and white beach.
But that wasn't all for the day's whale watching. We also met family friends for a whale watching cruise where we spotted lots of whale right next to the boat. Very cool!
