During the last weekend of July A had to attend a conference in Las Vegas. Since R had only been there for one day fifteen years ago she decided to tag along. During our short time there we attempted to see Las Vegas without focusing on gambling or partying. We walked the Strip, enjoying Bellagio's fountain show and conservatory. On a different night we drove to downtown to see the Freemont Street Experience. Casinos there looked antiquated compared to the modernity of the Strip. We enjoyed an outdoor concert and made our $40 last quite awhile at the $2 blackjack table.
The highlight of our trip was Cirque du Soleil's Zumanity show, adult-oriented acrobatic dancing combined with singing and comedy. This was our first Cirque show and while risque it was beautifully done. (And whetted our appetite for more Cirque performances, such as Alegria which came to Honolulu late last year.)
Aside from gambling and shows, Vegas is known for its vast variety of food choices. We enjoyed Hash House A Go Go's fried green tomatoes and double duck breast. Both dishes were excellent.

Last, R was excited to take advantage of mainland amenities and made the rounds at the outlet mall, Marshall's, TJ Maxx, and Trader Joe's (which resulted in half a suitcase full of groceries). And A had to have his west coast dose of In-N-Out.
Though Hawaiians consider Las Vegas "the ninth island", and indeed evidence of Hawaiian life can be found at the Las Vegas outlet of L&L Drive-Inn and at Walgreens which had a huge banner that read "We sell Hawaiian products", we could take it or leave it. But maybe because it was 103 degrees every day; perhaps we should try Vegas again in another season.
